Botox vs. dermal filler: what is the difference?
These treatments do different jobs. Botox is one brand of prescription botulinum toxin, often called a neurotoxin or neuromodulator in aesthetics. It temporarily reduces targeted muscle activity. Dermal fillers add volume in selected areas; the appropriate product and placement depend on the concern and your anatomy.
| Your question | Botox / neurotoxins | Dermal filler |
|---|---|---|
| What is the focus? | Selected lines associated with facial movement. | Selected volume, definition and contour goals. |
| What might I discuss? | Forehead lines, frown lines and crow’s-feet. | Lip definition, cheek volume or other appropriate areas. |
| How is a plan chosen? | Facial movement, muscle activity, product and personal goals. | Facial proportions, tissue characteristics, product and desired change. |
You do not have to choose a product before booking. Bring the concern; your injector can help explain the options.
When Botox may be the conversation to have
Notice lines most when you frown, smile or raise your eyebrows? That movement is useful information for your injector. A consultation includes looking at your face at rest and in expression, discussing what you want softened and identifying movement you want to preserve.
The American Academy of Dermatology explains that botulinum toxin can soften selected expression lines by relaxing targeted muscles. Changes develop gradually, and effects are temporary. Timing depends on the product and individual response.

When dermal filler may fit your goals
Perhaps your priority is lip definition, a change in facial volume or the balance between features. Dermal filler consultations look at the face as a whole, including the areas you like just as they are. Describe the change you want, and equally, what you want to avoid.
Filler selection matters. Different products have different approved uses, characteristics and expected duration. Ask which product is proposed, why it fits the area, and what a conservative starting point could look like. Our dermal filler service page is a useful place to begin.
Inspiration photos can help communicate a preference, but your anatomy guides the plan. Your face does not need to audition to be someone else’s.
Can Botox and filler be part of the same plan?
They may be discussed together when your goals involve both expression lines and volume. That does not mean everyone needs both—or that everything should happen at one appointment. Your clinician can explain whether a staged approach makes sense, how treatments interact with your broader skin plan, and when to reassess.
Try bringing three simple statements: “Here is what I notice. Here is what I like about my face. Here is how subtle I want the change to feel.” That gives the consultation a much clearer starting point than a fixed number of units or syringes.
Your first-appointment checklist
- Bring your history. Include previous injectables, dates, product names if known, medications, supplements and allergies.
- Share your calendar. Mention weddings, travel and photographs so the team can discuss recovery and settling time.
- Talk about comfort. Ask what the appointment may feel like and which comfort measures are available.
- Know the estimate. Review the proposed treatment and total price before proceeding.
- Plan the follow-up. Leave knowing when results will be assessed and how to contact the clinic with a concern.
Tell your provider about pregnancy, breastfeeding and relevant medical conditions. Follow individualized preparation instructions; do not stop prescribed medication on your own.
A little room for recovery
Bruising, swelling and tenderness can occur. Neurotoxins may also cause headache, asymmetry or eyelid/brow droop; rare swallowing, speaking or breathing problems require urgent care. Filler can cause infection or nodules, and rare injection into a blood vessel can cause tissue damage, blindness or stroke. Seek immediate medical attention for unusual pain, skin discoloration or vision changes after filler.
Discuss the specific product’s risks and aftercare with your clinician. The FDA’s dermal filler guide provides additional patient information. An event deadline should leave room for healing and follow-up.
Good questions. Clear answers.
Before you book
Will I look overdone?
Tell your injector how much change you want and which expressions or features you want to preserve. A conservative plan can be discussed, but no exact result can be guaranteed.
How long do Botox and filler last?
Both vary by product, area and individual response. Neurotoxin effects commonly last several months; filler duration depends on the specific material and treatment area. Ask about your proposed plan.
How many units or syringes do I need?
That requires an individual assessment. Your provider should explain the recommended amount and full cost before you decide. Another person’s treatment is not a dosing template.
Can I book before deciding between them?
Yes. Choose a Cosmetic Injection Consultation to discuss your priorities and suitable options before selecting a treatment.
